How PDF Compression Works

Our browser-based tool re-encodes the images inside your PDF at optimized quality, reducing file size while keeping text sharp.

1. Select your PDF

Choose the PDF file from your device. Files up to 50MB are supported for reliable browser performance.

2. Images are re-encoded

Each page is rendered and images are compressed at 70% quality, significantly reducing file size.

3. Download the result

Save a smaller version of your PDF with readable text and reduced image quality.

When to Compress a PDF

PDF compression is most effective when your PDF contains high-resolution images — scanned documents, photography, or design files. Text-only PDFs see minimal reduction since text is already compact.

Common use cases include preparing files for email attachments (which often have 10-25MB limits), reducing storage size for archives, optimizing PDFs for faster web loading, and fitting more files on limited disk space.

If you need to compress multiple PDFs, you can process them one at time. For password-protected PDFs, use our PDF Unlock tool first to remove the password.

PDF Compressor FAQ

How much can I reduce a PDF file size?

PDFs with high-resolution images can often be reduced by 40-80%. PDFs that are mostly text see minimal reduction since text is already compact.

Does compressing a PDF reduce quality?

Images are re-encoded at 70% quality. Text remains sharp and readable. There is a slight loss in image detail, but for most use cases the result is visually acceptable.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Processing happens entirely in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.

Can I compress password-protected PDFs?

No. Password-protected PDFs cannot be compressed directly. Use our PDF Unlock tool to remove the password first, then compress the unlocked file.
